APC leaders demand immediate takeover of Rivers assembly amid impeachment threat
In a dramatic display of political tension, civil society groups, media professionals, and All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders gathered at the APC Secretariat in Abuja to demand urgent action from the National Assembly regarding the escalating political crisis in Rivers State.
The protesters called for the National Assembly to invoke Section 11(4) of the Constitution, allowing them to temporarily assume the functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly, which they claim has lost all credibility and legitimacy due to persistent abuse of legislative powers and a desperate impeachment plot against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The groups described the assembly's impeachment push as a reckless abuse of power, threatening democracy. They praised Rivers Chief Judge Justice Simeon Amadi for his bold stand in rejecting calls for a probe panel, emphasizing his commitment to the rule of law.
The civil society coordinator, Comrade Blessing Ibama, accused the assembly of procedural lawlessness and disregard for court orders, questioning the validity of the impeachment allegations, which he described as pure political fiction with no evidence of Governor Fubara's gross misconduct.
The coalition further alleged that 27 lawmakers loyal to Minister Nyesom Wike, led by Martins Amaewhule, were fueling the crisis. They claimed these lawmakers had received substantial financial benefits, including millions in constituency funds, luxury SUVs, and a year's advance salary, raising suspicions of corruption.
The protesters vowed to continue their actions until the National Assembly takes decisive steps. They urged Nigerians to mobilize peacefully at the National Assembly to address this legislative anarchy.
Governor Fubara's supporters emphasized his prudence and commitment to the welfare of Rivers State, warning against using the state as a sacrificial lamb for political desperation. The coalition pledged to restore constitutional order and maintain unity in the face of this political crisis.
The protest was attended by prominent figures, including Comrade Ifeanyi Okorie and Dr. Maryann Douglas from civil society organizations, Mr. Collins Akpofure, Engr. Ibrahim Danjuma, and Elder Akpan Ekpeyong, who represented media professionals and APC leaders, respectively.
