In response to this stereotype, French-Chinese watchmaker Atelier Wen was established in 2018, aiming to elevate the status of Chinese-made watches. Their mission is clear: to shed light on the genuine craftsmanship present in China's watch industry and showcase it to collectors worldwide.
Atelier Wen has made notable strides in achieving its vision, particularly with models like the cleverly named Perception sports watch, which has received enthusiastic accolades. Competing in the $5,000 range is one thing, as this price point is generally seen as the starting line for luxury watches, leaving room for relatively low stakes for experienced collectors.
However, attempting to break into the $30,000 market? That’s a bold move.
In 2025, Atelier Wen unveiled the Inflection, an advanced variant of the Perception, distinguished by its case and bracelet crafted from tantalum. This groundbreaking development makes it the first mass-produced watch globally to be entirely fashioned from this notoriously challenging material. The exquisite finishing of this timepiece is likely to impress even the most discerning Swiss collectors, making it feel like a steal at its impressive price of $28,900—almost equivalent to the retail price of the well-regarded Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A.
