A tragic loss has shaken the boxing world, leaving a void in the hearts of many. Justis Huni, a rising star in the heavyweight division, has lost his long-time mentor and trainer, Keri Fui, in a devastating turn of events.
Fui, who was recently promoted to Huni's head trainer, suffered a fatal heart attack during a training session last week. Despite immediate medical assistance from Huni and his strength coach, Fui never regained consciousness and passed away, leaving a deep impact on those around him.
"This pain is indescribable, and it feels surreal," Huni expressed on social media. "Kez, my friend, my brother, I love you. Everything I do from now on will be in your honor. Until we meet again, my big buddy."
Fui's presence extended beyond the boxing ring. He was a beloved member of the Tasman Fighters stable, where he worked closely with world champion Jai Opetaia. "He was more than just a coach; he was family," said Fran Bradford, the logistics chief of Tasman Fighters. "Keri had an incredible ability to unite people, lift their spirits, and bring joy to every moment."
"He was always the first to offer help, dropping everything for those he cared about. His wisdom, energy, and love for boxing, his family, and the people around him were unmatched. Keri traveled with us, sharing our journeys, our triumphs, and our struggles. He had our backs through it all. We'll miss his laughter, his guidance, and his vibrant energy every day."
Opetaia, the IBF and The Ring cruiserweight champion, will headline the December 6 card, defending his titles against Huseyin Cinkara. Meanwhile, Huni is recovering from his first professional loss, a brave effort against Fabio Wardley in England, despite carrying an elbow injury that prevented him from sparring beforehand.
Despite the setback, Huni's stock has risen. "After my fight with Fabio, my reputation grew," Huni reflected. "And then, unfortunately, seeing Parker get stopped, my stocks went up even more."
Wardley, who has since defeated Joseph Parker, is now in line for a shot at the undisputed heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk.
Huni has parted ways with his previous trainer, Mark Wilson, after the loss. The boxing community mourns the loss of Keri Fui, a beloved figure who left an indelible mark on those he touched.
