NHL Commissioner Bettman Speaks Out: Construction Delays for Milan-Cortina Olympics Rink (2026)

Delays in the construction of the Milan-Cortina Olympic hockey rink are causing concern. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman isn't mincing words, expressing his disappointment over the slow progress of the main rink's construction. Speaking at the Winnipeg Jets' facility, he highlighted that this level of delay is unprecedented in previous Olympics, regardless of whether the facilities were permanent or temporary. This caution stems from the fact that, historically, ice rinks have always been completed much earlier in the process.

But here's where it gets controversial: The NHL is particularly worried about the quality of the ice surface. The league is taking proactive measures by dispatching its own experts to Italy to ensure the ice meets the necessary safety standards.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly has revealed that the main rink is slated for completion on February 2nd. With the women's tournament kicking off on February 5th and the men's competition running from February 11th to 22nd, the pressure is on.

And this is the part most people miss: The facilities themselves present another challenge. While they adhere to International Ice Hockey Federation standards, the rinks are smaller than those typically used in the NHL. The Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, with a capacity of 16,000 seats, and the secondary Rho facility have dimensions that differ slightly from the agreement between the NHL and the IIHF. The rinks will be wider and shorter than the standard NHL size.

This raises a critical question: How will these dimensional differences impact the game? Will the smaller ice surface change the strategies and pace of play? The NHL and NHL Players' Association have already emphasized their expectation for standard NHL-sized ice at the 2030 Olympics in France.

What are your thoughts? Do you think the rink dimensions will significantly affect the games, or is this concern overblown? Share your opinions in the comments below!
