As the year 2025 comes to an end, the Planet Rugby team has assembled an extraordinary lineup, showcasing the best XV players from the past 12 months across club and international rugby. This selection is a testament to the incredible talent and hard work displayed on the rugby fields worldwide.
The Dominance of the Springboks and the Lions' Legacy
In a year filled with thrilling rugby action, the Planet Rugby Team of the Year is dominated by the formidable Springboks, with a strong representation from the British and Irish Lions as well. But here's where it gets controversial: the selection process was no easy feat, with tough decisions and some notable exclusions.
Backline Brilliance
Starting at fullback, we have Thomas Ramos of France and Toulouse. Ramos played a pivotal role for both France and Toulouse, stepping up in the absence of Antoine Dupont, and was instrumental in their Six Nations triumph and Top 14 victory.
On the right wing, Cheslin Kolbe, the world-class South African, takes the spot. Kolbe had yet another outstanding year, scoring an impressive 15 tries in 26 appearances. His performances helped the Springboks lift the Rugby Championship title.
At outside centre, Huw Jones, a member of the World Rugby Dream Team, represents Scotland and the British and Irish Lions. Jones impressed during a challenging Six Nations campaign and played a crucial role in the Lions' Test series against the Wallabies.
Inside centre, Len Ikitau, the stellar Wallaby, had a remarkable season. Ikitau was a consistent performer for the Wallabies, especially during the Lions series, and his form earned him the prestigious John Eales Medal. Damian de Allende and Jordie Barrett also had notable years.
On the left wing, we find Louis Bielle-Biarrey, the magnificent Frenchman. Bielle-Biarrey's performances were nothing short of exceptional, starring in France's Six Nations victory and playing a key role in Bordeaux's Champions Cup triumph. His form earned him a well-deserved nomination for World Rugby Player of the Year.
The Mighty Back Row
In the back row, Ardie Savea, the all-round excellence, continues to shine. Savea had a stellar year at Moana Pasifika, winning the Super Rugby MVP award, and was a consistent rock for the All Blacks.
At openside flanker, Tom Curry, the English powerhouse, takes the spot. Curry proved himself as a true Test match warrior, edging out tough competition. He was immense during the Lions' Tests against the Wallabies and also stood out for England in the Six Nations and the autumn internationals.
Blindside flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit, the 2025 Planet Rugby ratings leader, sets the standard for back-rowers. Du Toit, nominated for World Rugby Player of the Year, was a dominant force in the Boks' pack, particularly in defence, contributing to their Rugby Championship triumph and unbeaten November campaign.
The Unstoppable Tight Five
In the tight five, Eben Etzebeth, the South African lock, takes the number five jersey. Etzebeth's relentless physicality was a key factor in the Boks' success, allowing them to adopt a new, attacking style. His ability to shine in big Tests was particularly notable.
At lock, Maro Itoje, the English leader, steps up. Itoje, after years of being tagged as the 'future captain', finally realized his leadership potential. He led the Lions to a series win against the Wallabies and also captained an England side that won 11 Tests in a row. His captaincy seemed to elevate his game to new heights.
Thomas du Toit, the South African tighthead, has had an exceptional year. Du Toit played a crucial role in Bath's historic treble and quickly established himself as the best tighthead in the league. He then transferred his form to the international stage, securing the Boks' number three jersey during the Rugby Championship.
Hooker Malcolm Marx, the recently named World Rugby Player of the Year, has taken his game to new levels. Marx's set-piece work helped the Boks create a platform for dominance, and he showed significant development in all areas of the game.
And finally, at loosehead prop, we have Ox Nche, the Springbok powerhouse. Nche took front-row dominance to new heights, earning a historic World Rugby Player of the Year nomination. He was an aggressive force in the scrum, and his all-round improvement was evident.
