Weather Alert: Auckland and Northland Brace for Intense Storms!
As of 3:10 pm today, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Auckland and Northland, with the potential for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The MetService has issued a warning, stating that rising temperatures could trigger intense showers and storms, with the watch remaining active until 9 pm on Sunday.
But here's where it gets controversial... Localized downpours of 25-40 mm/h are possible, and that's not all. The forecasters have also warned of potential surface and flash flooding in areas near streams, rivers, and narrow valleys. It's a recipe for a chaotic weather scenario!
And this is the part most people miss... The daytime heating is causing these showers to build up across the North Island. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in place for Northland and northern Auckland, and the risks don't stop there. Bay of Plenty is also expected to experience heavy showers and thunderstorms, while the ranges of the Westland District in the South Island are under a heavy rain watch until Monday night.
MetService has indicated that there's a moderate chance of this watch being upgraded to a warning. So, it's essential to stay informed and prepared.
