When opportunity knocks, hesitation can cost you everything. For pitcher Sonny Gray, that wasn’t a risk worth taking. The veteran right-hander instantly agreed to waive his no-trade clause when he learned the destination in question: the Boston Red Sox. Gray’s contract had given him full control over any potential trade, meaning the St. Louis Cardinals couldn’t have moved him without his consent. What made Boston so appealing? According to Gray, it wasn’t just the history or the passionate fan base—it was the team’s mindset. The pitcher admitted he had chatted with his former St. Louis teammate Steven Matz, who joined Boston at last summer’s trade deadline. Matz had nothing but praise for the environment, describing a clubhouse eager to compete. “I paid attention to what Boston was building last year,” Gray said. “It’s the kind of atmosphere I’ve always wanted: a big market that expects to win and thrives on competition. Boston checks every box.”
Since agreeing to the trade, Gray has already had conversations with manager Alex Cora and pitching coach Andrew Bailey. He’s also heard from several of his new teammates, which has only added to his excitement.
