Remember the Tigers' electrifying playoff run of 2024? Well, get ready for a blast from the past! Lefty Bryan Sammons, a key player in that success story, is making a comeback to Detroit on a minor league deal, with an invite to spring training. This news, confirmed on January 13, 2026, has fans buzzing.
Sammons, now entering his age-31 season, spent the last year honing his skills in Japan. He's no stranger to the Tigers organization, having been a part of the team's innovative pitching strategy that propelled them into the playoffs.
Drafted by the Twins, Sammons joined the Tigers in 2023 after playing independent ball. He quickly made his mark, starting at Triple-A Toledo before getting the call-up to Detroit in late July 2024.
His debut was anything but conventional. Manager AJ Hinch threw him into the fire in the first inning against Cleveland, with runners on base and runs already scored. But Sammons, unfazed, stepped up and delivered, pitching the next seven innings and saving the bullpen.
His role evolved, often appearing in high-pressure situations. For example, on August 3 against the Royals, he entered in the eighth inning with runners on, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure. These outings were a precursor to the Tigers' strategic use of bulk relievers, a tactic that proved crucial during their impressive 33-13 finish.
It was a bit of a surprise when he was sent down after only six outings, despite a solid 0.915 WHIP. He essentially bridged the gap until the Tigers could call up rookie Jackson Jobe in September.
Last season in Japan, Sammons pitched 120.2 innings and posted a respectable 3.43 ERA with Chiba Lotte, splitting time between their minor and major league teams.
He'll be joining a crowded field of bullpen hopefuls in Lakeland this spring, including veterans like Burch Smith, Tanner Rainey, Cole Waites, Jack Little, and Sean Guenther. But here's where it gets interesting... Could Sammons' experience in Japan and his familiarity with the Tigers' system give him an edge? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments!
