Trump's National Guard Plan: Illinois and Chicago Fight Back (2025)

A battle for control is unfolding in the heart of America, with Illinois and Chicago taking a stand against the Trump administration's controversial National Guard plan. This legal showdown is the latest chapter in a growing divide between Democratic-led states and the Republican White House, with immigration enforcement at its core.

But here's where it gets controversial: the Trump administration has painted a picture of Chicago as a war zone, justifying its aggressive tactics. However, Illinois and Oregon officials argue that this military intervention is unnecessary and only serves to escalate tensions.

The lawsuit filed by Illinois leaders is a bold move, stating that "these actions are part of President Trump's declared 'War' on Chicago and Illinois, and they are both unlawful and dangerous." It goes on to say that American citizens should not live under the threat of military occupation, especially due to political differences.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a Democrat, has labeled Trump's potential deployment as an "invasion." He has called on Texas Governor Greg Abbott, also a Republican, to block the deployment, but Abbott has defended the crackdown, citing the need to protect federal workers in the city.

The White House, through spokesperson Abigail Jackson, has justified the use of National Guard members, citing "violent riots and lawlessness" that local leaders have allegedly failed to address.

In Chicago, the presence of armed Border Patrol agents making arrests near iconic landmarks has only added to the concerns of residents, who are already on edge due to the recent immigration crackdown.

Mayor Brandon Johnson has taken action, signing an executive order to prevent federal immigration agents from using city-owned properties as staging areas.

And this is the part most people miss: protests have been a regular occurrence near an immigration facility outside the city. On Friday, federal officials arrested 13 protesters near the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Broadview. Mayor Katrina Thompson has now limited protest hours to 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., citing safety concerns.

The situation in Portland, Oregon, is also tense. U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, appointed by Trump himself, granted a temporary restraining order to Oregon and California, blocking the deployment of National Guard troops to Oregon. Immergut seemed perplexed by Trump's actions, questioning why he was circumventing her previous order.

Despite Trump's claims, crime rates across the U.S., including Portland, have actually declined in recent years. Data shows that homicides in Portland decreased by 51% from January to June this year compared to the same period in 2024.

Since the start of Trump's second term, he has either sent or threatened to send troops to 10 cities, including Baltimore, Memphis, and several California cities. A federal judge even ruled in September that the administration had "willfully" broken federal law by deploying National Guard troops to Los Angeles over immigration raid protests.

This ongoing battle raises important questions: Is the use of military force in these cities justified? Are local leaders failing to maintain law and order, or is this a political power play? We want to hear your thoughts in the comments. What do you think about this controversial National Guard plan?
