Demand for CDs peaked in the mid-2000s, but as digital music took over, many of us ditched our CD players. Now, the familiar whir of the CD player is returning to homes across the country. Retailers are noticing the trend, with stores like John Lewis increasing their CD player selections to meet the growing demand, reporting a 74% increase in sales over the past year.
The resurgence is also helped by the return of classic 90s acts like Oasis and Pulp, who were huge during the CD era and are now filling stadiums again. But here's where it gets controversial... while streaming dominates music sales, there's a growing demand for physical copies. Fans appreciate the artwork and liner notes, and buying a physical album is a direct way to support their favorite artists.
CD sales hit their peak in 2004, with a staggering 162 million units sold. However, sales plummeted in the following years, with only 10.5 million sold in 2024. But the decline is slowing. Neil Gibbons from Key Production Group, a manufacturer of vinyl, CDs, and cassettes, noted a 15% year-on-year increase in CD orders.
And this is the part most people miss... Research shows that physical music is becoming increasingly important to young Britons. Gen Z has actually bought more CDs than Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers in the last 12 months. They're actively seeking out these formats in stores and online. Furthermore, nearly half (46%) of Gen Alpha are listening to physical music, including CDs. They aren't just buying them to collect; over half know how to use a CD player.
Physical music is playing a significant role in artists' releases and chart results. Taylor Swift released four CD editions of The Life of a Showgirl for around £12, less than half the price of the vinyl version. Sam Fender also released a deluxe CD of People Watching with extra tracks. Pink Floyd even released a £215 box set with two CDs for superfans.
Some argue that CDs offer a richer sound than digital streaming, and while the number of CDs sold annually is still falling, the decline has slowed. At around £10-£11, CDs are also much cheaper than vinyl. Britons are also searching marketplaces for second-hand music, with eBay UK reporting an increase in CD searches as people seek more personal forms of collecting.
